Spezial Makes the Adidas Manchester Even Greater

Adidas’s Spezial line, which launched three years ago, takes classic styles from the brand’s archives and reworks them for today’s athletic wear enthusiasts. It immediately took off in Europe and is also gaining popularity in the U.S. and Japan thanks to a resurgence in casual fashion.

For the current autumn and winter 2016 season, one of the hit items in the Spezial range is the GT Manchester SPZL, a modern reinterpretation of Adidas’s classic Manchester shoe. According to Gary Aspden, the curator of the Spezial line, the GT stands for Greater Manchester, signifying that an already cult classic has been improved upon for an even better version. The GT Manchester features a redesigned toe box and toe overlay, a Mod Trefoil debossed tongue, and a Spezial footbed. Aspden says the materials used in the sneaker’s upper are also better quality than previous versions.

The 2016 GT Manchester Spezial features a soft, light blue suede body and matching laces, contrasted with orange-red zigzag stripes and heel tab. Finishing touches include a black rubber sole and ‘GT MANCHESTER’ printed in metallic gold above the stripe on the outside of the shoes.

Hit items from the Spezial collection can sell out almost immediately in some areas, but since Japan is still catching on to the line, often it’s one of the only places to get hard-to-find styles.
